Born to Bert and Jean Dobson in 1939, Michael lived with his sister Pat, in South Tonbridge and went to Sussex Road Primary School and then on to Judd School, Tonbridge. After O levels, he had to leave to get a job. He and Brian Spice helped found the Boys Brigade at the United Reformed Church in Tonbridge High Street during this time.
